| Mr Tele Ikuru |
The defection of the deputy governor of Rivers State,
Engr. Tele Ikuru from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the
Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) came as a surprise to the governor,
Rotimi Amaechi.
Ikuru had announced his defection from the APC on Sunday, March 22, saying the party is filled with rebels.
Speaking yesterday in Port Harcourt during a reception organised by the leadership of PDP in the state to welcome him back to their camp, Ikuru said he was deceived into dumping PDP in 2013 and joining the APC, Leadership reports.
According to him, Gov Amaechi made him believe joining the APC was the best thing.
“I was deceived, I must confess. I was told that it was the new
order. I did not know that it was all about the ambition of an
individual. I say big thank you to you all (PDP members) because when I
was deceived out of PDP, if all of you had not stood your ground to keep
the party alive, where would I have returned to?
“In our darkness, we thought that we were in the right place.
“What is happening in Rivers State today will haunt all of us if we allow it to go unchallenged,” the deputy governor said.
Ikuru decamped with some of his supporters including former deputy mayor of Port Harcourt City local government area, Hon Victor Ere, secretary of APC in Andoni local government area, Hon Kingston Silvanus, amongst others.
Report has it that he has moved out of his official quarters, located in the Old GRA, Port Harcourt, and moved into his personal residence.
Mr Ikuru was first elected deputy governor to Celestine Omehia in 2007, before the duo was removed by the Supreme Court less than six months in office. When Mr. Amaechi was sworn in as governor under the platform of the PDP, he retained Mr. Ikuru as his deputy.
At the time Amaechi fell out with the leadership of the PDP and defected to the APC, majority of his aides went with him including his deputy, Mr. Ikuru, who remained loyal to the governor and fought on the same side.
In his reaction to his deputy’s defection, Amaechi wished him all the best in his future political endeavor, noting that his reasons for defecting were shocking.
