Ohanaeze-Ndigbo, an apex Igbo socio-cultural group in
Nigeria, have cautioned against any kind of violence towards Igbo people
during and after the general elections.
According to the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Gary Enwo-Igariwey, Igbos are not going to tolerate violence and humiliation and are ready to strike a blow against offenders if needed. The warning was made by Chief Gary Enwo-Igariwey after a meeting at the organisation’s national secretariat in Enugu on Friday.
The Igbo union also advised Ndigbo to participate fully in the general election, voting any candidate of their choice, as well as making appropriate arrangement to save their lives and their family members before, during and after the polls.
Despite pleas by Igbo leaders and Ohanaeze Ndigbo, to the Igbo people, especially in the North, to vote where they live, hundreds are migrating to the Southeast in anticipation of electoral violence. However, yesterday Ohanaeze has called to evacuate Igbo citizens from troubled states in the Northern part of the country.
It would be recalled that there was a bomb explosion at the national headquarters of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, on Saturday, January 24, resulting in the destruction of the building and some other important items. Scores of Igbos in the Northern part of the country were killed during the civil war and subsequent presidential elections in Nigeria in 2011.
