There is no doubt there are personal issues between former leader Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan, but another man is behind Obasanjo’s exit from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The man who caused irreparable harm to the relationship and led Obasanjo to leave the PDP is none other than America’s most wanted Nigerian, Prince Buruji Kashamu.

When Kashamu was made southwest head of the PDP, Obasanjo voiced his disapproval in the strongest of language:

“Putting a certified unashamed criminal wanted abroad to face justice and who has greatly contributed to corruption within the judiciary on a high-profile of politics as you and your aides have done with the man you enthrone as PDP Zonal leader in the South-West is the height of disservice to this country.

Politically and height of insult to the people of South-West in general and members of PDP in that zone in particular.

Kashamu in turn described Obasanjo’s opposition as insincere, saying that the ex-leader had welcomed him with open arms when he was waging his fight against Otunba Gbenga Daniel, ex-governor of Ogun state. President Jonathan also responded to Obasanjo’s attack, describing it as “unwarranted”, and his comments “self-serving”.

Kashamu’s grip on the southwest PDP strengthened in the months to come, such that in the Ogun state PDP he became very powerful. Obasanjo complained to the party’s highest leadership but no one listened to him.

As the PDP collapsed with the defection from the party of five governors last year to join the APC, Obasanjo was rumoured to be the catalyst of the collapse, having encouraged the rebel governors to join the opposition party.

In many southwest states, significant figures in the party associated with Obasanjo also joined the other side. Obasanjo too became distant from the PDP’s affairs, choosing to operate principally as a party member from his ward 11 in Abeokuta.

To add insult to injury, Kashamu, using the court that Obasanjo blamed Kashamu for corrupting, stopped Obasanjo from selling his new autobiography, My Watch.

The former president had felt insulted, to be thwarted by a “wanted criminal”, who enjoys the backing of the state.

He finally cut his links with the party on Monday, February 16, after a series of attacks on the president and his supposed endorsement of the opposition candidate Muhammadu Buhari.
