Ibadan— A secondary school certificate holder, Mr. Akilapa Johnson, who disguised as a medical doctor, has been arrested by Oyo State Police Command for allegedly aborting a five-month pregnancy for a lady.

The unlucky woman, whose first name was given as Barakat, is now lying critically ill at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, after developing complications. While parading the suspect alongside dozens of others at the State Police Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan, the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Leye Oyebade, said the suspect was caught in his one bedroom apartment at Sasa area of Ibadan, where the abortion was carried out.

Oyebade further disclosed that investigation carried out by the police revealed that the O’ Level certificate holder was only trained as a paramedic nurse and a first aider. He said: “In spite of his limited knowledge of medicine, the suspect had consistently treated unsuspecting patients, who took him for a qualified doctor.” Speaking with newsmen, the suspect confessed that he actually posed as a medical doctor when he knew he was not qualified to do so.

He said: “My name is Johnson Akilapa; I am here because I performed abortion for a lady. I am a paramedic nurse. She begged me to do it for her.” When asked how many people he had done abortions for, he said the lady was his first. Her lover speaks The man, one Ikenna, who admitted he impregnated the lady, said she never told him that she wanted to abort the pregnancy.

The 29-year-old man, who claims he is a student of one of the polytechnics in the South-West, said: “She is my girlfriend and I did not plan to abort the pregnancy. She just called me all of a sudden, asking me to come to her shop. “On getting there, I saw her bleeding and she asked me to assist her home. I declined and thereafter called her parents. On our way home, I dropped her at a hospital and called her parents again. “I was aware that she is pregnant because she told me that she did not see her menstrual period.

But I did not tell her to abort because I did not disown the pregnancy.” The police also paraded many other suspects whose crimes ranged from robbery to kidnapping. Oyebade said all the suspects would soon be arraigned in court after police must have carried out thorough investigations into the crimes.
