Western Union, Money Gram transfers are now to be paid in Naira - CBN

Posted By: Official Admin - 8:10 PM

Recipients of Western Union, Money Gram transfers are now to be paid in Naira.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says it has suspended its Wholesale Dutch Auctions (WDAS) to check money laundering in the foreign exchange market.

A circular by CBN to Bureau De Change (BDC) operators on Friday said that the twice-weekly wholesale foreign exchange auction had been suspended for now.

The circular said the auction would be replaced with a retail version requiring dealers to reveal the identity of the buyers.

"The WDAs is hereby suspended and in its place Retail Dutch Auctions (RDAs) is hereby re-introduced with effect from Oct. 2, 2013," it said.

The circular, signed by CBN Trade & Exchange, Batari Musa, said that the RDA would take place on Monday and Wednesday of every week.

It stated that "available statistics indicate that Nigeria has become the largest importer of U.S. dollars due to importation of cash by Deposit Money Banks (DMBs)."

The circular said that dealers would now have to obtain prior approval to import foreign exchange bank notes to prevent money laundering.

"Any authorised dealer, intending to import foreign currency cash, is required to forward an application stating the amount and purpose to the Director, Trade and Exchange, CBN, Abuja," it said.

It directed that recipients of proceeds from international money transfer firms such as Western Union and Money Gram would be paid only in naira.

According to the circular, the limit on MasterCard, Visa naira debit and credit card spending abroad has been increased to 150,000 dollars a year from 40,000 dollars.

It said that the aim was to ensure transparency and reduce black market foreign exchange trading.

The new measures do not affect the 250,000 dollars weekly limit for foreign exchange dealer sales to bureau de change.

PDP Crisis: Arrest Obasanjo, Atiku, others now – Asari-Dokubo

Posted By: Official Admin - 6:43 AM

Mr. Asari-Dokubo says Jonathan is unreasonably shielding Amaechi.
The leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, NDPVF, Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, has demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and his former deputy, Atiku Abubakar, for their alleged role in the raging crisis within the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

He also asked President Goodluck Jonathan to deal decisively with members of the "New PDP" led by Kawu Baraje, especially the seven governors in its fold, by arresting their associates.

Mr. Asari-Dokubo, who stated this in an interview with PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday in Abuja, however, refused to speak about former military president, Ibrahim Babangida, who he said had not taken sides with either the breakaway group or the mainstream PDP led by Bamanga Tukur.

Atiku and the PDP governors of Jigawa, Kano, Sokoto, Kwara, Rivers, Adamawa and Niger States belong to the Baraje faction of the party. They announced the birth of the faction last August 31.
Mr Obasanjo headed the PDP elders team that mediated unsuccessfully in the crisis, though some of the governors are believed to be his political associates.

"'Obasanjo should be arrested and detained, yes and Atiku (Abubakar)," Mr. Asari-Dokubo said. "They are ordinary citizens of this country they are nobody. They are nobody. I don't know about Babangida, he has not come out to talk about where he belongs."

The NDPVF leader said there was no need pampering members of the Baraje faction, noting that with their action, they had shown that they were miscreants. According to him, members of the faction fouled of the Electoral Act by setting up a secretariat for a party that was not in existence.

According to him, "Those political miscreants; the president should use a hammer against them. There's no basis indulging these miscreants; they should be treated as such.

"There's only one registered PDP known to INEC and Tukur is the chairman of that PDP. For the president to indulge them is a slap on the face of politics. He should have hit them if they go against the law.

"If you set up a secretariat for a party that's not ready, then they should be arrested and detained. There's no party called new PDP. They should be treated as a lawbreaker."

Reminded of the constitutional immunity of the governors from arrest, Mr. Asari-Dokubo said, "(Since) the governors enjoy immunity, they should pick people around them, then they will know."

He described the Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Amaechi as "a traitor" even as he alleged that Mr. Jonathan was shielding the governor by his frequent visits to Rivers State.

"Amaechi is a traitor to all people, traitor to the interest of all members of the South-South and the South-East. He should be treated like a traitor.

"The President is shielding Amaechi; he is not fighting him, if not he shouldn't be coming to Port Harcourt every day."

Boko Haram leader, Shekau, resurfaces, claims responsibility for Benisheikh attacks

Posted By: Official Admin - 6:35 AM

Shekau spoke in a new video.

The leader of the Jamaatu ahlis sunnah lil daawati wall jihad, otherwise known as Book Haram, Abubakar Shekau, released a new video on Wednesday disputing claims that he has died.

The Hausa service of the BBC quoted the Book Haram leader as taking responsibility for last week's killings in Benisheikh, Borno State. He reportedly said that contrary to reports over 200 people died in the attacks, and not 160.

The Boko Haram leader also took responsibility for a similar attack in Monguno Town recently. He said his group will not stop its violent acts until an Islamic government guided by the Sharia is put in place, adding that they will continue to fight the democratic governance being practiced in Nigeria.

The Joint Task Force, JTF, had in August issued a statement in Maiduguri saying Mr. Shekau might have died of gunshot wounds sustained in a shootout with soldiers.

The video is the first statement by the sect's leader since the military's statement.

The Boko Haram, outlawed by the government, is responsible for the killing of thousands of people in various violent acts in Northern Nigeria.

The Federal Government declared a State of Emergency in three North-Eastern states in order to check the activities of the sect.
