The Catholic Church is seriously against the recent takeover of the Rivers State House of Assembly by the National Assembly, fearing that it might soon encourage other groups to attempt a take over the federal government.

A release by the Executive Secretary/National Coordinator of Justice Development and Peace Committee (JDPC) and Caritas Nigeria (JDPC), Reverend Father Evaristus Bassey "humbly advises against the concurrence of the Senate to the motion to take over the Rivers State House of Assembly. This could be an invitation for 'worse' take overs".

The Catholic Church was reacting to a recent pronouncement by the Federal House of Representative that said it would take over the day to day affairs of Rivers Assembly following recent fracas on the floor of the Assembly.

He said "the argument against military rule has always been that democratic institutions, if allowed to fumble and stand, would eventually reach a higher level of maturity.

"Although constitutionally empowered, the National Assembly, has not yet satisfactorily fulfilled its ordinary duties, not to speak of taking on extraordinary ones. The National Assembly could still provide support, without taking over the functions of the Rivers State House of Assembly".

Meanwhile, "we kindly advise Mr.
President to cease the manipulation
of events in Rivers State if he is so
connected. These events could be
early warning signals to greater
political catastrophes if they are
not nipped in the bud".

He said, "history has shown that
great upheavals and conflagrations
began with seemingly smaller events which were mismanaged.

"Governor Rotimi Amaechi, on his
part, while enjoying the support of
the vast majority of Nigerians,
should avoid acts that trigger
conflicts and the security of the
Rivers people in particular, and the
Nigerian nation in general".
