President Goodluck Jonathan. |
A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja today dismissed a
suit challenging President Goodluck Jonathan’s eligibility to seek a
second term in office, Daily Trust reports.
The suit was based on the argument that Mr. Jonathan had taken the oath of office twice, and was by law ineligible for a third, should he win.
In the ruling, the court awarded N50,000 cost to the president Premium Times reports.
Jonathan was vice-president under former president Umaru Yar’adua, but became president after Umaru Yar’adua died in 2010. He then contested the 2011 election and won.
He is bidding for a second term in office but a suit was lodged at the court alleging that he is constitutionally ineligible for a second term on the grounds that a second term would result in his exceeding the maximum period of tenure allowed.
The High Court in Abuja has now dismissed the suit against Jonathan, and therefore gives him the all-clear to contest the forthcoming elections.
