Posted By: Official Admin - 10:33 PM

Nigeria marks her 53rd year of Independence on Tuesday.

President Goodluck Jonathan will make an Independence Day broadcast to the nation at 7 a.m. on Tuesday.

This was stated in a Press Statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati.
Tuesday, October 1, 2013, marks Nigeria's 53rd independence anniversary.

According to the statement, all television and radio stations in the country are enjoined to hook up to the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) to relay the broadcast to their viewers and listeners.

Suspected Boko Haram members behead 10 travellers along Borno-Yobe highway

Posted By: Official Admin - 10:29 PM

The attacks took place on a popular highway.

At least 10 persons have been confirmed dead by security and transport officials after suspected Boko Haram terrorists launched two different attacks on a major highway in northeast Nigeria.

The terrorists had, during the attack on the Damaturu-Maiduguri highway, also set ablaze several vehicles, including those conveying food items to Borno State.

The attacks took place some few kilometres from Benisheik Town where terrorists dressed in military fatigue and riding in armoured tanks killed at least 140 travelers on September 17.

A security source who doesn't want to be named as he is not permitted to speak to the press, said most of those attacked were found beheaded.

"We found ten corpses by the road side near Benisheik just before Ngamdu Village; the victims were beheaded and their heads placed on their chests," said the security source.

Some road transport officials also confirmed that they saw the slain travelers.

Abubakar Haruna, an official of the NURTW said, "The killings were carried out between Ngamdu and Benisheik. We were on our way to Maiduguri around 6.30 a.m.

(Monday) when we saw the ten dead bodies," he said.

Journalists also got confirmation from the security sources that four people were also killed along the route on Saturday at a different spot near Benisheik.

The Yobe State Governor, Ibrahim Gaidam, on Monday warned travelers plying the Damaturu-Maiduguri highway to be extra cautious of the road, saying 'driving on that highway is a dangerous risk'. Mr. Gaidam sometimes plies the route.

Travelers are left in fear, and many have to put off their journey for fear of possible attacks by Boko Haram.

Vehicles including trucks conveying food items were set ablaze by the terrorists; a development that poses a threat of impending food shortage in the area.

Another commercial truck driver, Iliya Lado, told PREMIUM TIMES that 'despite these daily attacks, the roads are left without adequate security personnel; one will travel up to 50km without any manned security post. We really do not understand what is happening with the soldiers'.

Residents of Maiduguri have continued to languish in fear as the Boko Haram attacks intensify and gradually inch towards the state capital.

It was also gathered from transport workers that many of the victims to the Boko Haram attacks were those traveling to Damaturu to make phone calls, due to the general communication shut down in Borno for about four months now.

Nigeria formally hands over public electricity companies licences to private investors

Posted By: Official Admin - 8:03 PM

The companies are five generating companies and 10 distribution companies.

The Federal Government on Monday in Abuja handed over share certificates and licences to new core owners of 15 of the 18 successor companies of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN.

The ceremony, held at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, was presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan with the Vice-President and Chairman of the National Council on Privatisation, Namadi Sambo, in attendance.

Mr. Jonathan assured of better days for electricity users in the country with improved economy and employment generations.

"To the Nigerian people who have demonstrated such great patience and confidence, putting up often with darkness, noisy power-generating sets, the related pollution and daily disruptions in their lives, I say better days are coming.

"We do not expect the sector to be revitalised overnight, but we can all look forward to a better time very soon as we have seen in the telecommunication and banking sectors. I am confident that the power sector will promise no less, knowing the caliber of those who are taking over.

"Today, we embark on a journey, a journey that will usher us to a destination of enduring gain and fulfillment,'' he said.

Mr. Jonathan said the ceremony was a milestone in the nation's journey from a public-owned and -operated electricity sector to an industry driven by private sector. He commended the efforts of all stakeholders in the privatisation process for the transparent, fair and well-organised way they handled the process.

He urged the affected PHCN workers not to nurse a feeling of displacement, but to dwell on the tremendous possibilities that the revitalisation of the sector hold for the future.

While speaking, Mr. Sambo said the event marked another major landmark in the transformation agenda of the Jonathan administration.

He noted that at the inception of the programme, pessimists believed that the feat could not be accomplished.

The vice-president gave the assurance that the electricity market would be regulated in a manner that would promote growth and competitiveness.

"Electricity consumers are assured that their interests will be protected from over-pricing and poor service.

"It is important to stress that the role of regulation in a private sector-led electricity power sector cannot be overemphasised,'' he said.

Mr. Sambo commended international development partners such as USAID, DFID, the World Bank Group and AfDB for keeping faith with the process. He assured the investors that the Federal Government would protect their investments and create an enabling environment for a private sector-driven electricity market to flourish.

The privatised generating companies are Geregu Power Plc, Ughelli Power Plc, Egbin Power Plc, Kainji Hydro Electric Plc and Shiroro Hydro Electric Power Plc.

The 10 privatised distribution companies (Disco) are located in Abuja, Benin, Lagos (Eko), Ibadan, Lagos (Ikeja), Jos, Kano, Port-Harcourt, Yola and Enugu.

The three PHCN successor companies that have yet to be handed over because of outstanding issues are located in Afam, Kaduna, and Sapele.

PDP debunks APC’s allegation to rig 2015 general elections

Posted By: Official Admin - 5:19 PM

Olisa Metuh described the ACN's statement as "unfounded and mere sophistry''.

The Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP) has no plans to rig the 2015 presidential and general elections as alleged by the All Progressive Congress (APC), Olisa Metuh, PDP National Publicity Secretary, said on Sunday.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, Mr. Metuh described the allegation as "unfounded and mere sophistry''
"This is all excuses as the APC envisioned monumental failure in the 2015 polls.

"The APC is a media creation. They are not on ground; the statement is merely trying to justify its anticipated failure. The ruling PDP will no longer dignify disgruntled and frustrated persons and groups with responses and replies,'' he said.

Mr. Metuh said the PDP had directed all its organs to engage only in productive and pro-active activities.

"The PDP is only willing to discuss the policies and programmes of the government.

"Nigerians will like to know the oppositions' alternatives to the President's programmes.

"Let us remain focused on issues that will lead to good governance and will provide dividends of democracy for the people,'' he said.
The APC had in a statement alleged that the PDP had perfected plans to rig the 2015 presidential and general elections.

Lawyer sues FRSC over issuance of new number plates

Posted By: Official Admin - 4:45 PM

The lawyer argued that no Nigerian law backed the FRSC's action.

A lawyer, Emmanuel Ofoegbu, on Monday, filed a suit before the Federal High Court, Lagos, against the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), challenging the issuance of new number plates by the agency.

The applicant is seeking a declaration that the threat by the respondent to arrest and impound the vehicles of motorists who failed to acquire the new number plates from Oct. 1, was "unconstitutional".

The FRSC has since extended the deadline for procuring the new number plates to next year.
In his statement of facts, the applicant averred that the old number plates were issued under the provisions of the National Road Traffic Regulations (NRTR), 2004.

He said that the NRTR 2004 is a subsidiary legislation made under the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) Act, Laws of the Federation, as revised in 2004.

According to the applicant, the NRTR 2012, in Regulations 230 (2), provides that the revocation of the 2004 Regulations, shall not affect anything done, or purported to be done pursuant to that Regulation.

Mr. Ofoegbu averred that there was no law made in accordance with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which prohibits the use of the old number plates, or declares its use as an offence.

He also averred that the threat by the respondent to impound vehicles and arrest motorists who failed to comply with the October 1 deadline was a gross violation of the provisions of Section 36 (12) of the constitution, which guarantees the rights of individuals.

He, therefore, wants the court to declare as unlawful, the threat by the respondent to arrest motorists using the old number plates, because there was no law validly made in accordance with the constitution, prohibiting their use.

The applicant also seeks a court injunction restraining the defendants from impounding vehicles or otherwise arresting or harassing motorists who fail to acquire the new number plates.

The suit number FHC/L/CS/ 1332/13, was yet to be assigned to a trial judge as at Monday morning.

Baba Fryo - My Frustration As A Musician

Posted By: Official Admin - 12:09 PM

Denge Pose crooner Baba Fryo is still around, very much around. Our reporter recently caught up with him in Tedi Village in Ojo Local government area of Lagos and what could you expect? One of Ajegunles finest bared it all.

Excerpts:

WHAT is happening to Baba Fryo?

I am living a very simple life and trying to re-arrange myself since my last record label Ojez Music, frustrated me. I am trying to pick up myself again. If you listen to Peter Tosh in one of his songs he said: I got to pick up myself, dust myself up, and start all over again. So, I just want to start all over again as if I have not done music at all. I have some beautiful tracks right now. I will release one on air as a single.

What do you mean exactly by being frustrated?

My album was delayed for three years. Is that not frustration? Already I have taken my mind off music. I was made to feel as if I am no longer doing music again. He didnt make me feel as if I am still in the industry.

What were the terms of the contract?

For me, I refused to sign any contract when time has been far spent. It took them three years to draft a contract as against when I started with them spanning one to three years. You are now asking me to sign a contract. I am not a baby in this industry. That is why today, artistes pay for their songs to be on CD compilation and also pay the marketer to sell their music. The music industry is already corrupt. It has cancer for now.

COSON is paying royalty. Are you a member?

People that are being paid now are members of COSON. I am not a member of COSON but a member of MCSN. MCSN and all others are having issues. They dont have time to look for money. Everything about our royalty is pending. While I was there, they usually give us something no matter how small. I used to be a member of PMRSN, that is the former COSON.I left because they were not working well.

How many albums do you have?

I have three. I am working on the fourth one.

What happened after you released , Notice Me and why Notice Me?

Notice Me is about people who are full of themselves. You know my music affects the lives of people positively. Before the Notice Me song, there were a lot of braggarts who pretended to be what they were not. When people travel and return from abroad you know how they intimidate people around here .

It was rumoured that the song was an attack on Daddy Fresh?

Well, I will not say it was an attack on Daddy Fresh. In my first song, I said , I want to throw a stone and anybody the stone meets, thats his own problem. It is a conscience. If you are engaged in notice me and I play that song, it will affect you. Many musicians attacked me when I released the song. I will not mention names but they know themselves. Those who put earrings on their noses, ears, tongues, stomachs, everywhere, they attacked me seriously. I give thanks to God for the inspiration. Everybody has what influences what they do. People feel the kind of songs I compose and I am happy because when I did Denge Pose, it really affected people positively .

It was rumoured that you made so much money but lavished it, living in hotels?

That is iniquity. I lived in a hotel but I didnt pay a dime. It was while I was living in the hotel that I thought of buying a land. The first land I bought was two plots. When I realized I didnt like the area, I decided to sell them and bought other lands at Okoafo and Amuwo. Living in a hotel to me is a worthwhile experience. I experienced many things .It is not every cloth that is dried in the sun. I spent and Im still spending. But I dont spend anyhow. I still give thanks to God.

What was your experience?

You will see the case of a nursing mother with her baby coming to the hotel to sleep with an old man using a walking stick. I have seen some men with pregnant women. Not that the owner of the hotel supports these things , he dares not see it. Some would come with their child, give the child biscuit and leave him at the reception while they climb upstairs for the amorous romp even in a very hot afternoon. I saw many iniquities.

Denge Pose, was said to be an attack on Showkey?

Like I said, anybody who thought I was referring to him, then I was referring to him.

What is your relationship with Daddy Showkey now?

We are best of friends. We have talked about the past and realised we have made our mistakes. If we had been working together right from time, I think many Ajegunle artistes would be more successful today. Now that we are working together things are bound to improve for our people.

What do you think about Majek Fashek?

I wasnt close to Majek. Some individuals are saying his problem is spiritual. You cannot ask a sick person to tell you what is wrong with him. He cannot. If you ask Majek, he would tell you its spiritual. I think Majek needs to go back in time to correct his mistakes, his lifestyle.

You have been in music for sometime but some younger guys have taken over.

Do you honestly think you can still make a great comeback?

I believe hundred per cent that I will come back with my own pattern. Let me tell you something, some people believe that you must play what these boys are playing before you can make it. No, I disagree. Play something that people will accept. Once people accept what you play, that is all. I listen to the music they play these days and discovered they are old pattern. Its just a small touch that is added. Listen to Flavour. The beat is old, it is the tempo that has been increased. Even the woman that sang Ko si Oba bi re, is not different from the normal gospel music that was being played in the past. How can Baba Fryo sing like all these small boys? That is iniquity.

What kind of music do you play?

I play Afro reggae beat. That is why when I sing, they would say I sing like Fela. My own pattern is not Afrobeat. If you say Fela did not sing like someone, we were not his age mates when he was alive. We may not know who was Felas mentor or who he sang like. Somebody must imitate somebody.

In other words, Fela influenced your going into music?

Not only Fela. Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, and Manu Dibango also influenced me.

Jonathan offers no plan to resolve ASUU crisis, says strike politicized

Posted By: Official Admin - 7:21 AM

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday offered the clearest sign yet that his administration was in no haste to resolve the three-month-old strike by university lecturers, calling their demands "politicized" and urging the lecturers to return to work for the sake of the students.

On his fifth presidential media chat on the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, the president said the nation's bitter politics had crept into the strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, and was responsible for the refusal of the lecturers to suspend their action despite the government's effort.

"In the past, they did not go this far when strikes were called off; but now politics has gone into everything," the president said. He did not elaborate when pressed further by a five-member interview panel on his claim about ASUU demands being politicized.

Mr. Jonathan said his administration had made concessions for the strike to be resolved, and has demonstrated remarkable commitment to addressing the massive infrastructure in the universities, one of the key demands ASUU has made.

He said the lecturers have refused to accept the government's explanations that broad range reforms cannot be achieved instantly.

"ASUU strike is very very unfortunate," Mr Jonathan, himself a former lecturer, said. He said crisis in education, in developing countries would always continue.

The president said the biggest indication to his government's commitment to such reforms was the decision to catalogue the perennial rot afflicting all the universities.

"Throughout this time, no government has taken inventory of all the problems in federal and state universities," the president said. "We said this must change. But it cannot change overnight. So for ASUU to go on strike over infrastructure, they need to understand that we are serious about intervening starting with N100 billion."

The president's remarks on the strike was his first since lecturers downed tools in June, asking for improved pay and better funding for universities.

They vowed not to resume until the government fully implements the last agreement both sides reached in 2009.

The lecturers have vowed not to accept partial implementation of the agreement, with multiple intervention by the Senate and the House of Representatives stalemated.

The government said the challenges of improved funding requires more time, and claims it has made concessions by providing initial funding.

As the negotiations deadlock, millions of students have remained stranded at home with each claim of quick resolution to the crisis turning out unrealistic.

Mr Jonathan's comments on Sunday provided the strongest indication yet, that, save a change in decision, students will remain at home longer as the crisis stretches without a resolution.

Asked specifically what the way forward would be for the strike, the president said he was calling on the lecturers to resume work for the sake of the Nigerian children and to realize that the government was committed to improving education.

He said the 2009 agreement which ASUU has harped upon, was negotiated by officials incapable for such a responsibility as the agreement was "not implementable".

"Even if we have all the money in the world we cannot change things overnight," he said. "The members of ASUU are our brothers and sisters, they should look at these young people and look at the commitment of govt."

Nigeria at 53, what really we would be celebrating By Jibrin Ibrahim

Posted By: Official Admin - 7:05 AM

Tomorrow would be our 53rd independence anniversary and a lot of us would be asking ourselves what really we would be celebrating.

For the last two anniversaries, official ceremonies were not even organised.

Officialdom has been too frightened of attacks by insurgents to celebrate. We all recall that it was indeed during the 50th Anniversary Celebration that an explosion occurred just outside Eagle Square, the venue of the grand celebration.

It was a strong message that what Nigeria needed at 50 was deep reflection and introspection of our failures as a Nation rather than celebrations signalling that we are still alive. This reality is even more poignant today.

We live in a country where the military have been deployed in thirty-one out of our thirty-six states trying to restore law and order. Our children are being killed regularly for daring to go to school. Our universities have been shut down for months as the ASUU strike continues.

Our health system has collapsed and a significant part of savings are used to send the sick abroad in search of of medical treatment. A significant part of our petroleum is stolen and our governments are no longer able to meet their responsibilities.

Even more seriously, the incidence of poverty in our society today affects seventy per cent of our people who still living below the poverty line. Daily life a perpetual struggle for the masses that live without electricity and potable water.

The key problem affecting the nation is known to all – hydra-headed corruption. We have had a series of ruling classes that have transformed governance into successive expansion of mega corruption. The scale of corruption has been so massive that it has made nonsense of our efforts to practice the democratic mode of governance. Essentially, the key narrative of the Fourth Republic has been about corruption. Elections themselves are narratives about corruption.

Indeed, party nominations and elections are secured through bribes offered to those who control the party machine, security agencies and officials of the Electoral Commission.

The first Speaker of the House of Representatives, Salisu Buhari, has had to vacate his office following revelations that he had forged both his declaration of age and his degree certificate, purportedly delivered by the University of Toronto. Since then, we have had a litany of corruption which continued to grow culminating in the fuel subsidy scandal that revealed mega corruption had moved from the realm of billions of naira annually to cross the trillion naira threshold.

The combination of mega corruption and poor governance has created a situation in which the state is imploding. The Nigerian state is no longer able to play its legitimate role of imposing law and order. Those in power use security agencies for private purposes thus privatising state power. As the efficacy of violence as a tool for achieving one's purpose increase, many who are not in the corridors of power are also learning how to use it for their own agendas.

The police exist only to supply privatised security to the rich and senior government officials. Many poor people now devote their energy and inventiveness to kidnap the rich and get their slice of the pie.

The Nigerian state does not feel the need to promote the common good and its logic is essentially limited to the search for and access to prebendal offices and limiting the access of the people to power wielders. Our Constitution defines the purpose of the state as promoting the welfare and security of the people. Today, the people's welfare and security are at their most compromised in the country's history.

As the Nigerian state loses both its capacity and its pride, it has ceded maritime security and protection of petroleum pipelines to the leaders of armed militia. Since then, the theft of our dear petroleum has grown.

Nigerian politics today is about trying to substitute those in office rather than trying to change the nature of the political game. In this context, it is not surprising that insurgency has been growing and more and more social actors are joining the fray of using the instruments of violence to achieve their objectives at the cost of thousands of lives.

If the armed militants of a decade are today the guardians of state power and resources then the message is that the potential value of armed militancy is extremely high and what is good for the goose becomes good for the gander. In any case, there is no functional state apparatus to negotiate conflicting interests and pressures from the society so people seek their armed path to available resources.

Authoritarian ways of resolving conflicting interests and silencing pressure groups in Nigeria have failed. The growing insurgency in the country can have an even more dangerous impact because it can lead to or accelerate the process of national disintegration.

In this context, it is clear that the bulk of our political class has no capacity or will to rescue the country from the abyss. I believe we have reached a stage where concerted citizen action is required to secure for us independence from our demons.

The greatest threat to finding a path towards mending Nigeria is the lack of inspirational leadership. People are able to compete for power because they have had access to state power or those in control of state power and stolen billions of Naira.

This is the reality that makes people lose confidence in the future. This problem creates a situation in which people who are honest and sincere keep out of the political fray. This creates a bandwagon effect that makes every political generation worse than the previous one.

The political challenge facing the country is to reverse this trend. Nigeria has a large number of talented and well-trained people who can provide good leadership. We must start the process of identifying such people in out communities and convincing them to engage the political process.

As these people would not have amassed huge war chests composed of billions and indeed trillions of Naira, we must find ways of supporting them so that we can begin to change the nature of the political game. As we recall the great nationalists that fought for our independence, lets begin the process of producing and reproducing a political class that works for the Nigerian people.

Nollywood Stars Turned Pastors

Posted By: Official Admin - 9:36 PM

Although, many have criticised their decisions to embrace Christ, blaming such decisions principally on the turn of events in their lives, it is not out of place today to come across celebrities who have become preachers of the Word.

From Eucheria Anunobi to Zack Orji, Ndidi Obi, Pat Attah, Ernest Azuzu and many others, it has been a steady influx of fire-brand celebrity Pastors into the Vineyard of God. But the question on the lips of everyone is whether these celebrities have found true happiness after all, and if they do, how much has the pulpit paid off, in place of dumping their flourishing careers in acting for the work of God. Like the Biblical saying, "When we come to the Word of God and we pray over His Word, when His Word shines on us, we are exposed and emptied of any other thing."

Zack Orji

Ex-President of the Actors Guild of Nigeria,AGN, Zack Orji can be described as "a gentleman without blemish." This, no doubt informed his decision to become a worker in the Vineyard of God. Zack Orji ordained a full-time evangelist by Bishop Emma Isong of Christian Central Chapel International (CCCI).

He is said to have dedicated his time to preaching the gospel of good tidings across the nations of the world. The veteran actor has been spotted in such cities as Abuja, Nasarawa and Makurdi where he is engaged in various evangelical activities. But this, however, has not stopped him from storming the celebrity hangout, in Surulere to fraternize with his friends and colleagues in the movie industry.

Eucharia Anunobi

In fact, Eucheria Anunobi's conversion was the most talked about conversion to Christ in recent times. The actress who ruled the screen in the early 90s with her role in the film "Glamour Girls" has been trailed with many controversies and scandals, most of which bothered on her relationships and crashed marriage. But after many years of being in the news for the wrong reasons, Eucheria shocked her fans when she announced she had given her life to Christ. Few months after the announcement, UK was ordained at the Fresh Oil Ministry, Egbeda, Lagos, as an evangelist.

Interestingly, with her ordination which was performed by Pastor Psalm Okpe, Eucharia willed the power to preach as a pastor and she's doing so, without looking back. Those in the know said, she already counsels youths in the church and travels at random to spread the gospel of salvation.

This, however, has not taken away some of the traits that made her fans term her "a bad girl" before her transformation. She is still flashy and daring. Just weeks after the ordination, Eucheria bought a brand new BMW X5. Severally, she has refuted reports that she has abandoned her acting career for the work of God. Instead, she pointed out that she would be choosier in accepting roles in movies.

Pat Attah

Pat Attah? That play boy actor who broke the hearts of many 'Nollywood babes' during his time, and left as soon as the ovation was loud. The once-upon-a-dreadlock-turned clean cut actor, is currently based in Hamburg, Germany where he's winning souls for Christ. Those in the know said, he does not preach in churches, rather he is now very much a born-again.

Many knew him before he left the shores of the country as one who was close to the ladies and in love with the bottle. Today, reading his posts online, one would acknowledge the fact that Pat is a new creature in Christ. He often uses social network sites including Facebook to deliver his sermon and messages to those who care to read them. But what we don't know is how he has been faring over there.

Liz Benson

Elizabeth Benson, popularly known as Liz Benson used to be the toast of many lovers of Nigerian films and TV series. Her journey into stardom began when she appeared on the set of the popular television soap opera, Fortunes, in 1993. Liz Benson played the part of Mrs. Agnes Johnson in the soap, which ran for about two years on the NTA. After that, she acted in various TV series and many movies.

In 1994, her role in Glamour Girls, a very successful home video that focused on prostitution, literally changed her fortunes. The movie shot her into prominence and soon, she became a subject of many scandals and controversies, forcing her to disappear from teh scene, in order to rebrand herself. But as luck would have it, she got married to her Bishop Great Emeya husband in 2009, at the Rainbow Christian Assembly in Warri, Delta State. She has since been ordained an evangelist in the church. Presently, she runs the church with her husband.

Charles Okafor

Charles Okafor who staged a comeback to Nollywood recently in Uche Jombo's film, "Misplaced" after disappearing from the radar is also one of the actors that are winning souls for Christ. He used to act alongside Saint Obi, Zack Orji and Richard Mofe Damijo and has made a name for himself before disappearing from the scene.

The UNIPORT trained actor who starred in such films as Forest of Promises, Ocean Deep, Across the River, Between Love, Boiling Point, and Executive Connection, worked briefly with the Security and Exchange Commission, before resigning to go into full time acting. Recently, he was spotted at a filling station around Isolo area of Lagos, and from the way, he looked, the handsome actor has surely given up the things of this world.

Okey Ogunjiofor

Okechukwu Ogunjiofor is known to be the founder of Nollywood. He produced the film, Living in Bondage which gave birth to Nollywood. With the explosion of this movie in 1992, Nollywood prides itself today as second to the largest movie industry in the world after 20 years of its existence. But this man who started this innovation engage himself more in other aspects of movie production. He hardly features in movies but appears on special arrangement. He has since reconciled himself with his maker. Today, he is not only a preacher of teh Word, he is also House of God. He is also a motivational speaker and unknown to many, Paullo as he's fondly called by his fans is an author of many Christian literature .

Northern Governors demand end to Boko Haram’s bloody campaign Sani Tukur - 3 hours ago

Posted By: Official Admin - 9:08 PM

More than 30 students were killed in Yobe state on Sunday.

Governors of the 19 northern states, Sunday, charged security agencies to do all within their powers to halt the killing of defenceless citizens, and attacks on places of worship and educational facilities especially in the North East, by members of extremist sect, Boko Haram.

The Northern States Governors Forum, through its chairman, Governor of Niger State, Babangida Aliyu, said its members were seriously concerned at renewed attacks on innocent people, following Sunday's killing of about 38 students of the College of Agriculture, Gujba, Yobe State, as well as the killing of 15 persons in Zangang community in Kaura Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

"The forum is particularly alarmed that the shooting to dead of 38 students of the College of Education; Gujba, Yobe State followed the same pattern as the killing of 22 students and a teacher at Government Secondary School, Mamudo in the same state last July," said a statement signed by Mr. Aliyu's Chief Press Secretary, Danladi Ndayebo.

Boko Haram has slaughtered more than 3,000 people since it commenced its bloody campaign in 2009.

The latest appears to be the killing of the students in Yobe state. Many of the students were killed while sleeping in their dormitories, reports say.

Details of the attack remained sketchy but the provost of the college, Mulima Mata, confirmed the incident, which the News Agency of Nigeria said occurred early Sunday morning in the Gujba district of the state.

The Agence France-Presse news agency quoted a military spokesman in Yobe state, Lazarus Eli, as saying the gunmen also set fire to classrooms.

Although Boko Haram has not claimed responsibility yet, residents believe the attack has the imprimatur of its operations.

Academic activities only resumed last week in schools across Yobe state following 10 weeks of closure after the brazen attack by members of the violent sect on two secondary schools, which led to the death of 29 students and three teachers.

The state government ordered the closure of all schools in the northeastern state after the attack by members of the sect on Government Secondary School, Mamudo.

But Government Secondary School, Mamudo, remained closed for another two weeks for the conclusion of ongoing reconstruction work in the school, the state Commissioner of Education, Mohammed Lamin said.

The Boko Haram sect had on Wednesday and Thursday murdered at least 27 persons in two separate attacks in the border towns of Borno State, government officials and security sources said.

The Chairman of Gamboru-Ngala Local Government Area, Modu-Gana Sheriiff, told journalists that the 27 persons died when gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists attacked Fulatari and Kanumburi wards of the local government.

"The first attack occurred about eleven o'clock in the evening on Wednesday while the second was carried out last Thursday at about ten o'clock in the evening," Mr. Sheriff said.

"In the first attack, six people were killed and four others sustained injuries in Fulatari. While 21 people lost their lives in the second attack including the Village Head of Gamboru Lawan Ali Shettima, and two others sustaining bullet injuries and are now receiving treatment'.

The northern governors' forum described the fresh attacks as "horrendous, callous and devoid of any shred of humanity".

The forum called on security agencies to do more to protect the lives and property of citizens and also ensure that those behind the violence in the region are brought to justice.

The forum reiterated its pledge to continue to work with other tiers of government to bring an end to security challenges confronting the nation.

10 Ways To Get A Woman Into Bed (18+)

1. Have The Right Words: "Tell me I'm beautiful. Tell me I'm hot. Tell me I'm amazing. Then, I'm easy." – Kelly

2. Take A Bite: "I'm boring with a 'True Blood' fetish—grab a handful of hair and bite me on the neck." – Jenn

3. Pay Lip Service: "Be a good kisser. It's pretty much as simple as that. I'm fairly choosy about who I allow to stick their tongue down my throat, but once that line is crossed, the only thing that will pull me back from the point of no return — the peen precipice if you will — is a dude who slobbers all over my face or has wicked halitosis." – Lee

4. Get In The Kitchen: "Cook a great dinner for me. I'm talking good background music, a unique dish, a bottle or two of wine, maybe some flowers on the table (a clean apartment is a must, of course), a chocolate something for dessert, and I'm all yours." – Amber

5. Use Your Hands: "Start with a foot massage, then ease into a back massage. Give me little kisses on the inside of my thighs, my neck and my breasts. And I'll be putty in your hands." – Carrie

6. Take Charge: "Planning a date from start to finish gets me in the mood instantly. Knowing you took the time to ensure we have a fun time together outside the bedroom, gets me amped to have a good time in the bedroom when we're done. Only I'll take charge of that one." – Maggie

7. Flirt: "Sometimes when you've been in a relationship for a long time, the anticipation of seeing each other goes away. If a dude I've been with for awhile manages to recapture that early spark by sending me suggestive texts or touching me on the sly while we're out in public, I will tear his clothes off when we get home like we've just gone on our third date." – Emily

8. Be Patient: "Just don't be pushy, as nothing is more of a turnoff than when a dude seems to expect it and gets cranky when it's not happening. Be awesome and patient and hot, and eventually it'll happen." – Katrina

9. Get Competitive: "Maybe this is juvenile, but I love a challenge — literally. Dare me to beat you at pool, take me bowling and be amazed by my killer skills, and offer to give me whatever I want. If I win, will get you whatyou want too." — Megan

10. Go Down: "Uh, oral sex, obviously. I am physically incapable of not boning if a dude goes down on me first. Fact." – Annie

Me And Tonto Dikeh Are Good Friends – Solidstar

Posted By: Official Admin - 12:22 PM

Omotena crooner, Joshua Iniyezo, popularly known as Solidstar, tells Ademola Olonilua about his career and relationship with actress, Tonto Dikeh

Your album is coming out and the public expectation is way higher than your last album. What do you have to offer your fans?

I know there is a lot of expectation of me career-wise. I know I will live up to the expectation because I just released two songs online and the reviews are great. They are really doing well though we just released them online. The two songs are off the album. We just want everybody to go and get the album when it is out because there is going to be different things from Solidstar. People should expect different things from me because they know me as this R 'n'B artiste but I changed their perception when I released, Omotena and Skibo. I want my fans to know that apart from this afro-pop, I still do reggae, dancehall and the likes. It is more like a very versatile album. I just want to give everybody a different feel and various options to choose from.

This year has been good for you. It has been reported that you acquired multi-million naira properties this year alone. What did you do differently?

Last year, I performed a lot but most of them were free shows. I was only paid for a few. This year I made a lot of money, did a lot of things for a change. I told my team that we had to sit up. We had spent a lot on projects and we had to think of ways to get the money back. We had a meeting and decided that we all had to put in our best in whatever project we were doing. We thank God it worked out well. Now I am proud of not just my label, but of myself also.

You are known to be very close to Tuface, why are you not signed to his record label, Hypertek Records?

I was already signed to Achivas Music before Hypertek Records became my friend. I knew Tuface through my record label. We became very close that some people even thought I was signed under Hypertek. Kudos to Tuface, I really appreciate what he has done for me over the years. He is part of my success story. He got me fame and fortune and I am really grateful to him.

Are you dating Tonto Dikeh?
We do hang out. We relax together; we are very very close but not like girlfriend and boyfriend. We are really close. We hang out together, go to places and chill together.

Will you cut your dreadlocks anytime soon?

I will but not yet because I still need to make a lot of money. I have a small face. My dreads are deceiving a lot of people. If I cut them off I will look like a small boy and you may not recognise me. When I have decided to relax with music, then I will cut them off.

ATM thieves beat card security with new tricks

Posted By: Official Admin - 7:48 AM

Asides using physical threats of violence at Automated Teller Machine points, fraudsters have found other ways of robbing unsuspecting Nigerians via their ATM cards, ARUKAINO UMUKORO writes

A few weeks ago, Bola, as she preferred to be addressed, who just relocated to Nigeria from the UK, received a rude welcome to the world of Automated Teller Machine transaction in her country of birth.

She had just collected her ATM card from her bank and was looking forward to withdrawing money with it later that evening.

On getting to the ATM point at Mushin area, she met five persons there waiting. Two left immediately after making their withdrawals, while the other three men asked her to go ahead and make her withdrawal.

"It seemed as if they were waiting for somebody," Bola recollected. She was mistaken.

Being her first time of using the ATM card, she changed her Personal Identification Number and then proceeded to withdraw N20,000. "It was around 7.30pm, and I was all by myself. Then I felt something like a gun pressed on my back from behind, the other guys had surrounded me and they demanded that I gave them all the money. Knowing that it was futile to argue with them, I just did what they asked."

Just then, her phone rang out loud. It was a message informing her of the transaction. One of the guys snatched the phone from her, checked the message and realised she still had some money left.

"They asked me to withdraw the rest of the money in my account. It was like a movie. I lost N80,000 that day," she said, adding that she felt numb after the incident and couldn't tell anybody about it, until recently.

Many Nigerians have fallen victim to such incidents. And like Bola, they may not report it to the police or bank authorities for sundry reasons.

An expert  on security matters, Mr. Obadare Adewale, pointed out that fraudsters now resort to the threat of physical attack to rob their victims at ATM points because they cannot clone ATM cards like they used to do in the past.

"This is because the new ATM card, whether for debit or credit, is a chip-and-pin type. This ensures that the embedded microchip makes the card extremely difficult to counterfeit or copy if it's lost or stolen. With the chip-and-pin, it is not possible to fraudulently duplicate and steal other people's money using their ATM cards, unlike before, when ATM cards were magnetic fibre cards which could be cloned. As a result, card-cloning fraud has drastically reduced in Nigeria.

"The Central Bank of Nigeria has mandated all banks in the country to be EMV compliant.  Nigeria has joined countries like France and UK, although the US still uses magnetic fibre cards," he said.

According to Wikipedia, EMV, which means Europay, MasterCard and Visa, is a 'global standard for inter-operation of integrated circuit cards and IC card capable point of sale terminals and automated teller machines. It is used for authenticating credit and debit card transactions."

Many countries, like Nigeria, are said to prefer chip  cards because the feature makes purchasing abroad  easier.

As a result of this security development, fraudsters have developed other means of robbing people of their money. Adewale recounted a recent occurrence.

"It happened at a shopping mall, I don't want to mention the name. A woman's handbag was stolen from where she forgot it. The bag contained her ATM debit card and her driving licence. Unfortunately for her, the fraudsters were able to guess correctly that her date of birth was her PIN. That was how they started withdrawing and spending her money," he said.

This is the reason why the Executive Director, Business Development, Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System Plc, Mrs. Christabel Onyejekwe, advised that people should avoid using their dates of birth as PIN numbers.

"Those fraudsters could get it after three or four attempts. Don't use your birth date because it can be easily known. First and foremost, make your pin very distinct," she told SUNDAY PUNCH.

Another method fraudsters use nowadays is through 'phishing' emails.

These are scam emails sent to many where the bank customer is asked to click on a link to 'complete the upgrade of their Internet banking account to a safer platform." Sometimes, some people innocently fill the fraudulent form sent to them which would expose their bank statement and transaction details.

"In some cases, these fraudsters, fronting as bank officials, also call customers on the phone to request for their Internet banking token details. That was how a bank customer lost over N6m.

"On no account should you reply any email like that and do not click on the link or give somebody your PIN number or token details on the phone. No bank will ask you for such details on the phone," Adewale said.

It has become a common method so much that many banks now send disclaimer emails to their customers.

When these fraudsters don't resort to physical attack or send phishing emails, they look for loopholes whenever online transactions are being carried out.

"For Internet transactions, referred to as 'card not present' transaction, you need the Primary Account Number, that is the number at the front of the card, the Card Verification Value, the three numbers at the back of the ATM card, and your PIN number.

"And what most of these fraudsters do is that they carelessly roam about in places where these transactions are done. So, if you hold your card carelessly, someone can quickly cram the digits in front of the card and the three digits at the back of the card. Then, they can do transactions on your behalf. Some websites only need the PAN and CVV, but some others may ask for the PIN also," Adewale added.

Although the use of ATM card details for such online purchases and transactions is quite secure because, like Onyejekwe noted, "they are registered merchants and dealers."

She advised people to do such online transactions in secure and registered cyber cafes.

"Don't walk into cyber cafes that are not registered. There are registered cyber cafes on the Nigerian Communications Commission website," she said.

Since the ATM was introduced into the Nigerian market over a decade ago, there has been a rapid growth in the volume of transactions with ATM cards nationwide.

Fraudsters have also found different methods to beat whatever security measures put in place.

However, this worrying trend is not only common to Nigeria.

In April, US federal prosecutors said $45m was stolen in a few hours after a global network of hackers hacked a database of prepaid debit cards and subsequently used it to loot financial institutions around the world. A US lawyer had described it as "a massive 21st-century bank heist."

Also, statistics released by the European ATM Security Team in April showed that total ATM related fraud incidents increased from 20,244 in 2011, to 22,450 in 2012. While losses due to ATM related fraud attacks rose by 13 per cent from €234m to €265m.

The report noted that the rise was due to an increase in losses due to card skimming attacks, which rose 12 per cent  from €232m to €260m.

"The majority of ATM related card skimming losses continue to be international (losses outside national borders by criminals using stolen card details) with most occurring in countries outside of Europe.  Such losses increased by 21 per cent when compared to 2011.  The top three locations for such losses were the USA, the Dominican Republic and Brazil," the report stated.

Protect yourself from ATM theft

• Get in the habit of using the same ATM for your transactions. Become familiar with it and be able to recognise changes to the machine.

• Use ATMs inside banks rather than on the street (where they're easier for thieves to access).

• If you're visiting an unfamiliar ATM that is not inside a bank, examine it carefully for devices. Card or cash trapping devices need to be glued or taped to the card reader or cash dispenser. Look for 'extra' cameras beyond the basic and generally obvious ATM security camera.

• Never rely on the help of strangers to retrieve a confiscated card.

• Never use an ATM when other people are lingering.

• Report confiscated cards immediately. If you can, don't leave the machine. Instead call the bank from the ATM where your card was taken using a cell phone.

• Don't use ATM with extra signage or warnings posted on the machine.

• Never follow a link in a supposed bank email notice. If you are wondering if your bank has really contacted you via email, then close the email and directly type your bank's website address into your browser. Visit your account and look for update notices directly on your account or bank's website. The email is almost always a phishing scam.

Police arrest Suntai’s aide - Reasons

Posted By: Official Admin - 7:24 AM

Police in Taraba State have arrested the Senior Special Assistant to the ailing Taraba State Governor, Mr. Danbaba Suntai on Media  and Publicity,  Mr. Sylvester Yakubu Giwa.

Giwa was said to have been picked up by a team of policemen at about 10 pm on Friday while relaxing with friends in a hotel.

Although reasons for his arrest were not known, but Sunday Punch gathered that it might not be unconnected with a statement he made, accusing the Deputy Governor, Garba Umar, of being disloyal to Suntai.

Giwa told newsmen at the Taraba police headquarters where he was sitting  behind the counter that "as a law-abiding citizen of the country, I never resisted when the team of police came to arrest me, though no reason was advanced for the sudden arrest."

But the Police Public Relations Officer,   Joseph Kwaji, told our correspondent on the telephone that he was not aware of the arrest.

Meanwhile as tension and reactions continue to trail the arrest of the governor's media spokesman on Saturday, the immediate past commissioner  of Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Emmanuel Bello, in a press statement issued Saturday and made available to Sunday Punch in Jalingo condemned the torture and continue detention of the SSA.

He accused the state  Commissioner of Police, Jubril Adeniji, of being  Umar's agent of intimidation, saying,  "Mr. S.Y  Giwa's arrest in Jalingo is the latest proof of the return of jungle justice and reign of terror in Taraba under Garba Umar's administration."

Bello noted that the commissioner of police in the state was anxious to carry out Umar's directive no matter how childish and unlawful it was.

He added that the police boss last week invaded  Government House and dispersed a group of former commissioners, who were on a visit to Suntai.

He also accused the commissioner of police of engaging in an illegal meeting with the deputy governor.

Bello  called on the Inspector-General of Police to caution the commissioner of police, saying he was taken absolute authority from Umar.

Also reacting, the immediate past Commissioner of Justice of the state, Mr. Timothy Kataps, said the reason behind the arrest of senior special assistant on media was that he (Giwa) said Umar was running a parallel government, which was against the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In his reaction, the Chief Press Secretary to the acting governor, Mr. Kefas Sule, said the arrest of the media aide to Suntai had no link with the office of his boss.

Breaking: Nigeria Polytechnic lecturers, ASUP, vow to resume nationwide strike on Friday

Posted By: Official Admin - 10:43 PM

The lecturers stated their position in a communiqué released on Saturday.

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, announced on Saturday that it has resolved to resume its suspended nationwide strike from next week, following failure of the federal government to fulfil its agreement with the union.

The union had been on several weeks of strike, but suspended it on July 17 following the intervention of federal lawmakers in its negotiation with the federal government.

The National Publicity Secretary of the union, Chirman Clement, in a statement on Saturday said the union took the decision at her 75th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held at the Federal Polytechnic Bida, Niger State and resolved to resume the suspended strike on October 4.

"In view of the continued insincerity of Government to honour the agreement reached with ASUP, NEC resolves that the union will resume the suspended strike with effect from 4th October, 2013.

The lecturers also lamented the decaying standard of polytechnic education and solicited the assistance of the National Assembly, parents, and other notable groups to assist in revamping polytechnic education in Nigeria.

They passed a vote of no confidence on the National Board for Technical Education, NBTE, and called for the immediate establishment of a National Polytechnics Commission (NPC) to proactively cater for the needs of the sector.

The frustrating inertia of the Federal Government to convincingly fulfill any of the promises and agreements reached with the union before the suspension of the strike on 17th July, 2013 on CONTISS 15 Migration for Lower cadres, Needs Assessment of Polytechnics, release of Whitepaper of visitation to Federal polytechnics, discrimination between polytechnics and university graduates in job placement and career progression and the constitution of Governing Councils to Federal polytechnics earlier omitted.

2. The anti-labour stance of the National Assembly as exemplified by the recently proposed removal of minimum wage from the exclusive legislative list of the constitution to the concurrent list; as well as the proposed legislation against declaration of Industrial Strike by unions in the tertiary sector;

3. The growing tension in the nation's polity as a result of the volatile comments and activities of politicians and interest groups;

4. Government's abuse of the laws establishing TETfund;

5. The culpable lack of commitment of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) to meeting the needs and demands of polytechnic education in Nigeria.

6. Appointment of rectors/provosts from within polytechnic/monotechnics sector
RESOLUTIONS: In the light of the above, NEC resolves:

1. That Government should without delay address all the outstanding  standing issues including the NEEDS Assessments of the polytechnics and the corresponding funding, constitution of the Governing Councils of the remaining Federal polytechnics, CONITSS 15 Migration of the Lower Cadres, the removal of disparity between HND and Degree  certificates, establishment of the National Polytechnics Commission (NPC), release of the Whitepaper of the visitation panels to polytechnics;

2. That the National Assembly should rescind from its current anti-labour posture in the interest of industrial peace and our desperate move to rescue the endangered soul of the tertiary institutions in the country;

3. That the National Assembly should expedite action on the review of the Polytechnic Act;

4. That a vote of no confidence be passed the NBTE and further calls for the immediate establishment of a National Polytechnics Commission  (NPC) to proactively cater for the needs of the sector;

5. That the Nigerian political class and other interest groups should exercise restraint on their utterances and activities in the interest of peace, unity and security of the nation;

6. That the Federal Government should desist from abuse of TETfund laws;

7. That stakeholders in the education sector such as parents, students, religious leaders, the press, members of States and National assemblies to rise to their responsibilities of rescuing the (polytechnic) education sector from imminent collapse;

8. That the position of ASUP on the need to appoint the rectors from  within the polytechnic system remains irreversible;

9. That in view of the continued insincerity of Government to honour the agreement reached with ASUP, NEC resolves that the union will resume the suspended strike with effect from 4th October, 2013. NEC sincerely appreciates the good people of Nigeria and all other stakeholders in the education sector for their sustained support in its struggles to save the polytechnic education from total collapse in Nigeria.

The Highest Paid Nigerian Hip Hop Artistes And How Much They Charge

Posted By: Official Admin - 7:49 AM

Award-winning singing duo, Peter and Paul Okoye famously known as P-Square are the highest paid hip-hop artistes right now, ENCOMIUM Weekly findings have revealed. The Okoyes are currently charging between N9 and N10 million for a show within Nigeria.

Apart from information gathered from the source close to the duo, independent music promoters/artiste managers also confirmed this, declaring the Koko master, D'Banj as the second highest paid artiste. The DB Record boss charges between N6 and N7 million as a standard show fee.

"Before the split of Mo'Hits, it used to be D'Banj. When D'Banj was charging between N7 and N8 million, P-Square's fee was N5 million", a veteran music manager affirmed, adding, "Right now, it's P-Square."

The afro-pop king, 2Face Idibia is the third highest paid. Although, 2Face's performance fee has not been consistent, it's within N5 and N6 million.

Industry sources told ENCOMIUM Weekly that 2Baba, as he's fondly addressed, easily adjust fees because of the love he has for fans. "I agreed that he's the third because he loves what he knows how to do best than the money. He's man of the people and he loves to reach out to the people. He's always happy when he's on stage."

Star Boyz owner, Wizkid, who stormed the industry three years ago, rose to become the fourth highest paid music star, collecting between N4 and N5 million. Although, the Jaiye Jaiye artiste has not featured in any big show in recent times, he also told ENCOMIUM Weekly in a recent interview that he charges N4 to N5 million.

Female singer, Omawumi Megbele is the highest paid female star. She collects N3 million alongside some male artistes, including Flavour, Timayah and the rave of the moment, Olamide. Others are Darey Art Alade, Duncan Mighty, and Chocolate Music artistes, M.I and Ice-Prince.

The likes of Kukere crooner, Iyanya, Davido, Wande Coal and Tiwa Savage are in the league of artistes that go for N2.5 million, while D'Prince, Dr.Sid and one time highest earning artiste, 9ice collect N2 million respectively.

Aside artistes that still receive less than N1 million, Naeto C and Waje's fee is N1.5 million.

"Basically, each artiste has a standard fee for gigs, concerts but for private parties such as birthday, wedding, etc, it varies. Some people would call for reduction simply because they are individuals, not brands. It depends on the artistes whether to accept or not. What I know is that it's always fixed", said an artiste manager.
