Popular Bollywood actor and producer, has been jailed for five years.
The Indian filmmaker who is cited in the media as one of the most commercially successful actors of Hindi cinema, was declared guilty of homicide yesterday and sentenced to five years in prison, almost 13 years after he killed a man sleeping on a sidewalk in Mumbai and injured four others by running them over with his SUV.
Khan was also charged on negligent driving and driving under the
influence of alcohol. Recall that the actor had made it known previously
that it was his driver that was driving the car on the day of the sad
accident. However, the judge told the dejected actor saying , “You were
driving the car.”
News channel NDTV, made it known that the judge rejected the actor’s repeated denials over the past decade that he was behind the wheel. The Bollywood star listened to the verdict with tears in his eyes, while local media reported that members of his family present in the courtroom broke down in tears.
The 49-year-old handsome actor will become the second popular Bollywood actor to be imprisoned in the past two years, following Sanjay Dutt, star of a series of gangster movies, who was jailed for possession of weapons linked to several bombings in Mumbai in 1993.
