A beloved boxer dog known as 'Mack' was left fighting for life after heroically saving his owner's two-year-old daughter from a venomous tiger snake and being bitten in the process.

Mack killed the snake that was just metres from 2-year-old Carmen as she played on a trampoline in the backyard of her home in the Melbourne suburb of Tarneit, but he was bitten several times by the 4-foot long snake and left in a critical condition after the encounter last Thursday.

Mack is now home after spending time in U-Vet Animal Hospital

His owner, Jo Shaw, who calls Mack her 'best mate', said she and her husband Leigh rushed their pet to the vet before having him transferred to a bigger hospital.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Mail Australia, Mrs Shaw said:

'Carmen was jumping on the trampoline and the dog was running around in the yard. I walked away to load the dishwasher and I heard a clap of thunder. My daughter came running and she said, "Hi Mum, Mack's not coming."

'I went and found him frothing at the mouth and paralysed and he wasn't breathing. My husband and I, we rushed him to the vet.'

Mrs Shaw said she searched in her yard to find the creature that had bitten Mack and was stunned to find the massive snake.

It was already dead but was less than two metres from the trampoline where her daughter was playing. 'I was just in shock because I didn't know if it was poisonous. I was in shock thinking he was not going to make it,' she said.

She said that Mack was given three doses of anti-venom, adding that 'he was in a really bad way' after suffering kidney damage from the snake venom.

He was transferred to U-Vet Animal Hospital in Werribee. 'The doctors there brought him back,' Mrs Shaw added.

'The next morning, he was chewing on the ventilator to get off the life support machine.' But as Mack's medical bills mounted to $6,000, she was at a loss at how to cover the cost.

The family decided to sell their most prized possession, a 1968 Holden HK Kingswood sedan, to get the money.
