The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a man, Mr. Paul Obiefule, for allegedly beating his 12-year-old relative to death.

The relative, who was identified as Onyedikachi Mbanozo, was staying with Obiefule, a bricklayer, and his wife on Omitola Street in the Agege area of Lagos.

Punch Metro learnt that Onyedika, as the boy was fondly called, was the son of Obiefule's wife'sbrother. It was further gathered that the boy was beaten to death on Monday evening around 8.30pm, while the neighbours reported the matter at the Pen Cinema Police Division on Tuesday.

Akpabio says criticisms against scandalous N200 million pension law “laughable”

The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Godswill Akpabio has described as "laughable", the barrage of criticisms against the new pension law which will allow him pocket over N200 million annually as retirement perks.

Speaking on a morning show on Channels Television Friday, Mr. Akpabio said the law was meant to check excesses in the implementation of the old pension law.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) said the comment credited to information minister Labaran Maku that the federal government was spending significantly on security in three of its controlled states was a categorical declaration of the office of the president vacant by the minister.

Obasanjo Warns Military Officers Over Abducted Chibok Girls

An eyewitness said the driver of a Daf truck, who was on top speed, lost control of his vehicle, rammed into the median of the bridge, before he eventually crashed into the car that driven by Ladoja's son.

Robbers Kill Bank Manager & 4 Policemen, Cart Away Millions

A gang of daredevil armed robbers on Wednesday shot and killed four policemen and a middle-aged man, said to be regional manager of a new generation bank at Igwurita community in the Ikwerre area of Rivers State.

The incident which took place at 9:45am at the Igwuruta roundabout forced motorists plying the Airport Road to speed off while those who were near the scene abandoned their cars and scampered for safety. One of the top Boko Haram leader, Hassan Ali, who was arrested by the local vigilante in Maiduguri three weeks ago, has confessed that he got "married" to two of the abducted Chibok girls in Sambisa forest.

According to reports, Hassan Ali, a native of Kwapchi-Kilakise village allegedly killed his father, Mallam Hassan Arigizhe, and his uncle, Zakariya Ali. He was also said to have sanctioned the killing of his younger sister whom he forcefully took to Sambisa when she refused to accede to the séxual demands of one of the Amirs (leaders) in Sambisa, an act that elevated him to the position of Amir too.

A 25-year-old woman was stoned to death by her family outside one of Pakistan's top courts on Tuesday in a so-called "honor" killing for marrying the man she loved, police said.

Farzana Iqbal was waiting for the High Court in the eastern city of Lahore to open when a group of around dozen men began attacking her with bricks, said Umer Cheema, a senior police officer.

Her father, two brothers and former fiance were among the attackers, he said. Iqbal suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead in hospital, police said.

Nigeria’s Democracy Day Special: Our democracy at a crossroads

It is now fifteen years since the military withdrew and Nigeria returned to full democratic rule. By Nigerian standards, it is a new record. The immediate post-independence democratic era lasted for only five years and three months (October 1, 1960 to January 15th 1966). It was characterised by parliamentary rule.

The military stayed in power for thirteen years and finally inaugurated a renascent democracy in 1979 under a presidential constitution. The second period lasted for only four years and three months and the military came back to stay in power for another fourteen years and five months (January 1, 1984 to May 29th 1999).

That our latest experiment in democracy has endured this long can be traced to three factors. The first was the masterstroke delivered in June 1999 by President Olusegun Obasanjo as soon as he assumed power. He retired some 93 military officers who had tasted political power and thusly broke the network of conspiracies that tended to see the military as the easy alternative to take over the reins of governance and eagerly waited to cash in on any easy excuse to do so.

2 Nigerians Jailed For 27 Years For Smuggling Heroin In Cambodia [Photos]

 

A Cambodian court sentenced three foreigners from Australia, France and Nigeria to between 23 and 27 years in prison on Wednesday for attempted heroin smuggling.

Australian woman Yoshe Ann Taylor, 41, and French woman Charlene Savarino, 19, were arrested at Phnom Penh International Airport with 2.2 kilos (4.8 pounds) of heroin in a backpack in September last year.

Precious Chineme Nwoko, 23, from Nigeria was arrested the same month at his rental home in the capital.

Female Students Molested as Gunmen Invade University Hostel

The level of crime and criminality in Nigeria is getting worse by the day. Youths suspected to be cult members, invaded the female hostel of Benue State University in Makurdi and robbed students of their valuables.

According to sahara Reporters, Over the past two weeks school officials based at the Adamawa State University have been the recipients of written threats directed at them and word of the letters has shaken both the student body and officials at the school.

A source has told SaharaReporters that the letters are believed to be real, with school officials and the student body suspecting it is coming directly from the Islamist insurgent group Boko Haram.

The 25 House of Assembly members in Ondo State, this morning selected a lawmaker representing Okitipupa State constituency II, Hon. (Mrs) Jumoke Akindele as their new Speaker.

Akindele, who has now replaced former late Speaker, Adesina Samuel who died February this year, is the first ever female lawmaker to have been picked as Speaker in the history of the State.
