reportedly made a shocking demand from President Muhammadu Buhari-led
government.

DAILY SUN reports that the Boko Haram terrorist group on Wednesday, July 8, made a demand from President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration. The terrorist group reportedly offered to free the over 200 Chibok girls that were kidnapped from their school; Government Girls Secondary School in Chibok town, Borno state in April 2014, in exchange for the release of its members held by the Federal Government. This was made known by a human right activist, who didn’t want his name in print because he is not authorized to speak on the issue. The activist said Boko Haram’s current offer is limited to the Chibok girls only.
Recall that the kidnapping of the girls sparked a worldwide outrage and a campaign to “Bring Back Our Girls” which eventually spread to the White House, US, and other capitals across the world. Last year when former president Goodluck Jonathan was still in power, the terrorists also demanded the release of 16 Boko Haram detainees in exchange for the Chibok girls.
Meanwhile, Fred Eno, an apolitical Nigerian, who has been negotiating with Boko Haram for more than a year, confirmed to the AP that another window of opportunity opened in the last few days, though he could not discuss details. He said the increased attacks from the militants are consistent with past violence as they seek a stronger negotiating position.
THE PUNCH reports that the peace committee headed by the former Speaker of the 7th House now Sokoto State Governor, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, appeared to have failed to resolve the leadership crisis in the caucus of the All Progressives Congress at the House of Representatives. The indication came when the leadership of the House on Wednesday, July 8, remained resolute on the elected candidates insisting that, there is “nothing like party position” in response to a previous letter APC sent to the Speaker, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, on the zoning of principal offices.
It was gathered that after Tambuwal committee met with the group led by Speaker Dogara, and that of a former Minority Leader, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, the crisis which emanated from the sharing of principal offices remained unresolved. It was further gathered that Gbajabimaila’s group at the meeting with Tambuwal, insisted that party’s decision on the allocation of the offices must prevail, while the Speaker’s group also maintained its stance that federal character and zonal balancing must be reflected in the sharing the principal positions “in such a way that no zone of the country” would be left out.
Recall that the APC had written to the Speaker that the South-West should produce the Majority Leader; North-West, Deputy Leader; North-East, Chief Whip; and South-South, Deputy Whip. The North-East and the South-South later swapped their positions, assuring that they remain loyal to the party.
THE NATION reports that the power tussle that
accompanied the election of principal officers in the House of
Representatives as against the party’s decision might linger on since
the peace committee chaired by Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal,
after a caucus meeting held on Wednesday, July 8, failed to broker peace
between the warring groups. It was gathered that Speaker Yakubu
Dogara’s group said it had conceded Majority Leader to Femi
Gbajabiamila’s group, but the group remains adamant that the position
must not go to the Southwest and Northeast.
It was reported that the House has supported the position of Dogara’s group, pointing out that the country’s stability should come first in the minds of the aggrieved parties. According to Abdulrazak Namdas, deputy chairman, ad hoc committee on media and publicity, to “exclude any geo-political zone from the principal officers meant the country was heading to sectionalism, which the APC is trying to eliminate.” The Gbajabiamila group, under the name “APC Loyalist Group”, said the proposition is unacceptable.
Meanwhile, with the proposition of the Dogara group, Gbajabiamila or any member from the Southwest cannot be Majority Leader. The same goes for Mohammad Monguno and others from the Northeast. It was also gathered that in order for peace to reign, Gbajabiamila was offered to head the AdHoc Committee on Constitution Review in place of being the majority leader of the 8th Assembly, but he reportedly turned it down.
Recall that violence broke out in the hallow chamber on June 25, over Dogara’s refusal to read a letter from the party containing the names of its chosen candidates for principal officers. The chaotic plenary forced the Speaker to adjourn proceedings till July 21.
VANGUARD reports that the Lagos Coroner’s Inquest into the collapse of a six-storey building belonging to the Synagogue Church of All Nations (SCOAN), on Wednesday, July 8, indicted the church for “criminal negligence” and recommended that it should be prosecuted. This indictment is coming after 10 months of sitting to ascertain what caused the building collapse of September 12, 2014, which led to the death of 116 people.
Chief Magistrate Oyetade Komolafe, who presided over the Coroner’s Court, while delivering its judgment, said the Church did not get the necessary permit or approval before commencing construction of the building. He also held that the “death of victims of the collapse was consistent with blunt force trauma that would normally be sustained from a collapsed building.” The magistrate added that most of the victims sustained various injuries comprising haemorrhage, loss of limbs, crushed bones, and multiple rib fractures, perforation of the lungs and destruction of left tibia vessels, strangulation, as well as chest wounds.
Komolafe also cleared the air that the alleged aircraft which SCOAN claimed hovered over the building minutes before it collapsed was not the cause of the collapse of the building. The Lagos State Government inaugurated the Coroner’s Inquest under the state’s Coroner’s System Law No. 7 of 2007 to investigate the cause and circumstances that led to the death of 116 people, mostly South Africans. The court was mandated to bring its findings and recommendations to the appropriate authorities.
THE GUARDIAN reports that the Central Bank of Nigeria as against an average of $300 million spent on 41 items on its restriction list from subsidised official foreign exchange window may have consumed an estimated $12.3 billion between January and May, 2015 to subsidise imports of finished goods. A blame game had reportedly begun between the apex bank and members of the Organised Private Sector. The CBN claimed that the non-remittance of forex earnings by OPS members who retain such in foreign domiciled accounts resulted to the huge demand on the bank for forex.
OPS, however, is of the opinion that the apex bank action encourages investors and manufacturers to pay for inefficiencies in governance and management of resources, adding that members of the OPS and manufacturers differed with the CBN on the classification and definition of some of the products restricted from access to forex market. The OPS stated that some of the products are raw materials used in the course of production in their factories.
Also, the manufacturers criticised access to the forex market by fuel importers while restricting members of the real sector. The apex bank while maintaining its stance on its forex policy, asked for understanding from members of the OPS, explaining that there is a wide gap in the demand-supply chain of the nation’s foreign exchange earnings, therefore necessitating an adjustment on the demand side by reducing the pressure from importers of finished goods into the country.
