The governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have
called an emergency meeting to find ways of settling the major crisis
over the choice of new leaders for the position of Senate President and
Speaker House of Representatives.
According to Premium Times, the meeting was called by the chairman of the APC governors forum and Governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha.
A source at the secretariat revealed that the meeting would hold on Monday at the Imo state governors lodge in Abuja.by 5p.m. The aim of the meeting is to find a solution to the crisis generated by Saturday’s mock election.
Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila were elected as Senate President and Speaker of the House respectively.
The two main opponents Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara, who are also APC members, left during the elections and rejected the results. They vowed to challenge the candidates during the main election on Tuesday.
The APC national secretary, Mai Mala Buni in a statement urged Saraki and Dogara to abide by the decision of the party.
After numerous failed attempts by the party’s leadership to persuade Saraki and Dogara to drop their ambitions, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo decided to intervene.
One of Dogara’s loyalists said APC lawmakers have received text messages informing them of a meeting with the vice president and that they won’t be attending.
Meanwhile a group called the Registered Trustees of Social Justice and Civil Rights Awareness Initiative have filed a suit against Femi Gbajabiamila, claiming he is “not morally fit” to be the new Speaker of the House of Representatives.
